Summary

• The solid line is the median outcome across simulations; the shaded bands nest around it, from the 25th–75th percentile (most likely) out to the 5th–95th percentile (rare) in the default view.
• Wider bands mean more uncertainty, which is normal for longer time horizons and higher-equity portfolios.

Reading the fan chart

The fan chart shows how your total wealth might evolve over time. The solid line is the median (50th percentile) — half of simulations end above it, half below. By default ("Modern" view), the shaded bands nest around that line: the innermost band spans the 25th–75th percentile (most likely outcomes), out to the outermost band at the 5th–95th percentile (rare outcomes). Wider bands mean more uncertainty, which is normal for longer time horizons and higher-equity portfolios.

Switch to the "Classic" view (top of the chart) to see the same data as labelled percentile lines instead of shaded bands — Adverse (10th), Cautious (25th), Good (75th), and Optimistic (90th).
